Service When Driving Less

Car Maintenance When Driving Less | Mitchell Buick GMC | San Angelo, TX

With more folks working from home around San Angelo and nationwide, people are driving much less than usual. But just because your car is sitting in your driveway for longer periods of time doesn’t mean you should skimp on taking care of it. With a few easy-to-do tasks, you can make sure that your ride is reliable whenever you leave the house.

Drive it once a week

Just because you’re working from home and social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t take your car out for a spin. In fact, if you want to make sure it’s in tip-top shape, you should take it for a spin on the regular.

Starting your car and going for a drive around the block or around town is a great way to keep your battery charged. Going for a drive also gets the fluids flowing so that your engine parts, brakes, and more stay lubricated.

Check tire pressure

When you’re not driving much, you might not notice if your tires start to lose air and even go flat. A flat tire can damage the wheel if left too long, so it’s important to keep an eye on tire pressure and add air when you need to.

Keep the tank full

If you aren’t planning to drive for a while, top off your tank. Leaving your gas tank to sit for a long time half-full means condensation can build up inside as well as hazardous gasoline fumes. Keeping it full prevents this.

Use a car cover

It’s most ideal to leave a car that’s parked for long periods of time protected by a garage or roof of some kind. If that’s not an option, a car cover is always a good second choice. This helps keep out the elements such as dirt, dust, and rain, protecting the paint from corrosion over time.

Keep up with regular maintenance

Just because your car isn’t being driven doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stick to your maintenance schedule. Motor oil can still degrade when your car is sitting, so it’s important to replace the oil and filter about every six months. For this and other maintenance, schedule an appointment with Mitchell Buick GMC.

The service team at Mitchell Buick GMC is here to help no matter how often or how far you drive. Call or email to set up your appointment and we’ll make sure your ride is ready for you.
